Broads, Sisters, Exes: Feminist Millennial Television is on sale!
My newest book, Broads, Sisters, Exes: Feminist Millennial Television (Wayne State University Press) is now available for purchase. I began exploring the increasing depictions of women-centered series on broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services around 2018. I focused initially on the award-winning CW series Craxy Ex-Girlfriend and soon turned my attention to innovative contemporaries like Broad City, Girls, Insecure, and Jane the Virgin. Though each series is unique and iconic in its own way I noticed their creative teams were led by women who experimented with style and tone in original ways. These series also focused on Millennial generation characters.
The drollness of Girls, the hyper surreal element of Jane, the unapologetic West Coast Blackness of Insecure, etc. felt new especially after decades of women being portrayed stereotypically or as overly earnest. I expanded the list to include Fleabag, I May Destroy You, Orange is the New Black, and Shrill. Writing the book was a pleasure because I got to rewatch these series and place them in the broader context of how they have advanced television as a form.
The book is widely available from the publisher (Broads, Sisters, Exes) as well as numerous online and brick-and-mortar stores. As an author I always encourage readers to support local, independent bookstores whenever possible. Over the next few months, I’ll be discussing the book on college campuses, local bookstores, and other venues. I look forward to connecting with you and hearing from your impressions of the book.
